A Deep Commitment to Alleviating Food Insecurity
Betty Lou's Pantry is dedicated to alleviating food insecurity through comprehensive support. By partnering with local organizations and volunteers, we nourish families and individuals in need. Our work reflects a deep commitment to community welfare and a shared goal of reducing hunger.
Our Story
The food bank began in the home of Fern Mann in Coopersburg, where she fed members of the community who were struggling to find work. As word spread of her ministry, and it became too large for her home, Fern sought help from the Southern Lehigh Area Churches (SLAC) board, leading to the formation of the Southern Lehigh Area Churches Food Bank. Initially housed at Pinebrook College, the food bank moved in 1987 to the basement of St. James Lutheran Church for more space. Managed by a committee from 13 churches, it receives generous donor support.
Serving Families and Honoring Service
The food bank serves between 25 and 50 families biweekly and distributes food on Saturday mornings and as needed. In 2009, Betty Lou Clauser retired after 26 years of continuous service to the community. The food bank was permanently renamed Betty Lou's Pantry in honor of her tireless efforts.

Betty Lou's Pantry is blessed with strong community support, evidenced by the annual Scouting for Food drive that brings in close to 10 tons of food, the annual Letter Carrier food drive that brings in close to 5 tons of food, and year-round donations at our local post offices. Monetary donations also come in from residents and businesses, including the local Giant, where we are the recipient of the "round up at the register."
Each month, one of the churches that support the pantry brings a group of volunteers to help the patrons with their shopping. Those churches are:
